Outseta uses predefined billing stages to describe the state of an account's current subscription.

By design, these stages are not editable—instead, they reflect the financial standing of each account. If you want to change an account's billing stage, you need to change the account's subscription (accept a payment, cancel the subscription, etc).

Below, you will find definitions for each billing stage. The numeric value corresponds to how each stage is identified when working with Outseta's API.

Trialing (2) - The period when the base subscription is free. If a user is currently on a free trial or subscribed to a free plan, their billing stage will be "Trialing."

Subscribing (3) - The user is currently on a paid subscription and contributes to your monthly recurring revenue (MRR).

Canceling (4) - The customer has indicated they want to cancel their base subscription.

Expired (5) - The base subscription has ended after cancelation.

Trial Expired (6) - When a user's free trial period has ended, and the account has never paid.

Past due (7) - The base subscription is current, but payment has failed. The user likely needs to update the credit card information that they have on file.

Cancelling Trial (8) - When a user requests to cancel during a free trial period. The user will continue to have access for the rest of the trial period, but will not be subscribed at the end of the trial period.
